How to plan the drive
The Gulf coast is not one continuous beach strip; it has a natural break. From Naples up to the Tampa Bay beaches the towns come close together, then the Big Bend, the marshy elbow where Florida turns west, opens a long gap. The drive from Tampa up to Destin runs about 6.5 hours around that curve on US-19 and I-10, so treat it as a travel day rather than squeezing a beach stop in. Everything south of Tampa is 1 to 2 hours between stops.
Fly into Southwest Florida (RSW) near Fort Myers to start in the south, and out of Pensacola (PNS) or Destin/Fort Walton (VPS) at the top so the route runs one direction. A rental car is required. Go in the dry season, November through April, for the clearest, calmest water and the lowest humidity, though the Panhandle stays cooler in winter with chilly nights. Summer brings warm water and daily afternoon storms that clear fast. See our getting around Florida guide and use the Southwest Florida region page to fill in the southern stops.
Days 1 to 2: Naples, Marco Island, and Sanibel
Start in the polished south. Naples has upscale sand, a walkable pier, and calm swimming, and JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort at 400 S Collier Boulevard just south is a full-service base for families. Book a shelling cruise, sunset trip, or backcountry fishing charter in Naples with Pure Florida at 1200 5th Avenue S or Dalis Fishing Charters at the Naples City Dock, both easy walk-up operations near downtown.
On Day 2, cross to Sanibel and Captiva, the barrier islands famous for shelling. Bowman's Beach on Sanibel is one of the best shell beaches in the country, and the low profile of the islands keeps the water shallow and calm. Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina at 275 Estero Boulevard on Fort Myers Beach makes a convenient base for the island cluster. This southern stretch is about slowing down, so give it two nights before the drive north. Read more on our Florida beaches page.
Days 3 to 4: Sarasota, Siesta Key, and the Tampa Bay beaches
Drive about 2 hours north to Sarasota. Siesta Key has some of the whitest, finest quartz sand anywhere, cool underfoot even at midday, and it regularly tops national best-beach lists. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and run a bay fishing trip with CB's Saltwater Outfitters at 1249 Stickney Point Road, or take a jet ski and parasail tour with Siesta Key Watersports at 5253 S Tamiami Trail. In Sarasota proper, Mote Marine Laboratory at 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway is a working marine science center and aquarium worth a morning.
On Day 4, continue an hour up to the Tampa Bay beaches: Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach. Opal Sands Resort & Spa on S Gulfview Boulevard sits right on Clearwater sand, and Island Grand at TradeWinds at 5500 Gulf Boulevard on St. Pete Beach is a big family resort. For fishing, Hubbard's Marina at 170 Boardwalk Place E on Madeira Beach runs everything from half-day party boats to 39-hour offshore trips. See the full lineup on our Tampa Bay region guide and Florida fishing charters page.
Day 5: The Big Bend drive to the Emerald Coast (about 6.5 hours)
This is your travel day. From Tampa Bay up and around the Big Bend to Destin is roughly 6.5 hours on US-19 and I-10, through quiet Nature Coast country and the pine forests of North Florida. It is a long haul, so start early, pack snacks, and treat the drive as part of the trip. If you want to break it, the springs country around Crystal River and the Nature Coast makes a good midday stop; you can even swim with manatees there in winter. Read the Crystal River guide if you have time to spare.
You arrive on the Emerald Coast in the evening, and the change is obvious: the sand turns sugar-white and the water glows green over the pale bottom. Check in around Destin and rest up, because the Panhandle beaches are the payoff of this whole trip. For the deep dive on this stretch, our Emerald Coast Panhandle beach trip covers it town by town.
Days 6 to 8: Destin, 30A, and Pensacola
Destin is the heart of the Emerald Coast, with the whitest sand and the best sportfishing harbor in the state. Book a dolphin cruise or fishing trip with Pelican Adventures or Olin Marler's Dolphin Cruises & Fishing Charters on Harbor Boulevard, and eat waterfront at Fudpucker's Beachside Bar & Grill at 20001 Emerald Coast Parkway or the landmark McGuire's Irish Pub of Destin at 33 US-98. Just east, the 30A corridor through South Walton strings together quiet, design-forward beach towns like Seaside and Rosemary Beach that are worth a slow afternoon.
Finish with a run west to Pensacola, about an hour from Destin. Pensacola Beach has wide white sand and the protected dunes of the Gulf Islands National Seashore at Fort Pickens. Eat fried Gulf shrimp at Shaggy's Pensacola Beach at 701 Pensacola Beach Boulevard and stock a cooler at the legendary Joe Patti's Seafood at 524 S B Street before you fly out of Pensacola (PNS). To thread this Gulf run into a broader trip, see our Orlando and the beaches plan or the full Panhandle region guide.
Where to stay and eat down the Gulf
In the south, the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort at 400 S Collier Boulevard is the full-service family base near Naples, and Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina at 275 Estero Boulevard on Fort Myers Beach keeps you central to the Sanibel island cluster. You can eat and book a boat trip in the same walkable stretch of downtown Naples near Pure Florida at 1200 5th Avenue S.
Around Sarasota, the Kompose Hotel Sarasota puts you a short drive from Siesta Key, and on the Tampa Bay beaches Opal Sands Resort & Spa on Clearwater Beach and Island Grand at TradeWinds at 5500 Gulf Boulevard on St. Pete Beach sit right on the sand. For dinner, the historic Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City is the oldest in the state, and Bulla Gastrobar Tampa is a livelier tapas option in the city.
On the Emerald Coast, base around Destin or the quieter 30A towns, then eat where the locals do. Fudpucker's Beachside Bar & Grill at 20001 Emerald Coast Parkway and the landmark McGuire's Irish Pub of Destin at 33 US-98 cover Destin, and up in Pensacola, order fried Gulf shrimp at Shaggy's Pensacola Beach or Crabs on the boardwalk and stock a cooler at Joe Patti's Seafood at 524 S B Street before you fly out.
For the budget, this coast is about 600 miles end to end, so a one-way rental with an open-jaw flight into RSW and out of PNS keeps you from backtracking. Beachfront room rates peak spring through summer on the Panhandle and hold high through winter in the warmer south, so shift your priciest nights to the coast you care about most. The long Big Bend day is the one true travel day, so book that night's room ahead and leave early. See our getting around Florida guide and the Panhandle region page to fill in the northern stops.
Two more things make the Gulf run easier. First, the southern and northern halves feel like different trips, so pack for both: warm swimming and light layers down south, and a jacket for cool Panhandle evenings if you travel in winter. Second, book your fishing and dolphin trips a few days ahead, since the good captains fill up. In the south, Naples Fishing Boat at the Naples City Dock and Salty Sam's Marina in Fort Myers Beach add options beyond the downtown Naples operators, and just north of Naples, Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park has a quiet beach with good shelling and calm swimming. On rainy or wind-blown days, The Florida Aquarium at 701 Channelside Drive in Tampa is a solid indoor stop, and Topgolf Tampa is an easy evening with older kids. Time your Big Bend travel day for good weather, since the drive is long and there is little reason to do it in the rain, and if you have a spare morning, the Crystal River springs on the Nature Coast let you swim with manatees in the cool months. Keep the priciest beachfront nights on whichever coast, the soft-sand south or the white-quartz Panhandle, matters most to you.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Florida Gulf coast road trip take?
Plan on 8 days to run the whole coast from Naples to Pensacola without rushing, about 600 miles including the long Big Bend drive. If you only have time for one section, the southern beaches around Naples, Sanibel, and Sarasota make a great 4-day trip, and the Emerald Coast from Destin to Pensacola is another strong 3 to 4 days on its own.
Why is there a long drive in the middle?
The Big Bend, where Florida turns from a north-south peninsula to an east-west Panhandle, is marshy Nature Coast with few beach towns, so there is a roughly 6.5-hour gap between the Tampa Bay beaches and Destin. Treat it as a travel day. You can break it up with a manatee swim or spring stop around Crystal River.
Which has whiter sand, the south Gulf or the Panhandle?
The Panhandle's Emerald Coast, from Destin through 30A to Pensacola, has the whitest, finest quartz sand in Florida, so bright it can hurt your eyes at midday, over water that glows green. The southern Gulf around Naples and Sanibel has softer, warmer-toned sand and the best shelling. Both are calm and shallow compared with the Atlantic side.
When is the best time for the Gulf coast?
November through April brings the clearest, calmest water and lowest humidity across the whole coast, though the Panhandle can have chilly winter nights and cooler water. Summer means warm swimming, daily afternoon storms that pass quickly, and busier beaches. Watch the forecast during hurricane season, June through November.
